A message from Beecroft resident & 2017 Seniors Festival Ambassador Graham Ross

Being a Seniors Festival Ambassador is a privilege I’ve enjoyed for six years. The NSW Department of Family and Community Services do a great job creating thousands of events across the state, mostly free, for seniors to enjoy, experience new ideas, learn new skills, share knowledge and make new friends. There’s a full list of local community events in Kuring- gai and Hornsby in this newspaper. I often get asked with a seven day working week why do I need to be a Seniors Ambassador?

It’s simple really – when I look back over a lifelong career in gardening and 39 continuous years in the media, I reflect on the amazing people I’ve met and the incredible places and experiences I‘ve had that have helped me get to where I am today. I quietly thank them for the journey and the knowledge they’ve shared along the way.

Now it’s my turn to give back those skills, joys and experiences to a broader community, share my experiences and inspire others to get out there participate, tell their story, keep going and never give up. Ordinary people are never really ‘ordinary’ – they all have different skills and capabilities we can all learn from. Your ‘boring’ story could be someone else’s life changing droplet of knowledge.

Our Hornsby Shire covers low, medium and high density living. With low density you may never see your neighbour for weeks or months on end, they’re acres away. With medium density streets we’re all too busy working and getting on with our lives, while the recent explosion of high density has brought together people with different languages and cultures but also different ways of becoming lonely.

Don’t forget to knock on your neighbour’s door to help get them involved in 2017 Seniors Festival

For me encouraging seniors into gardening, a healthy, friendly community or personal activity that can provide gentle exercise, fresh flowers and vegetables for the kitchen, increasing self sufficiency, enjoyment and independence is my mission. And of course I enjoy meeting people too.
