Every Wednesday morning I volunteer at Fusion Hornsby, a not for profit community based organisation whIch offers a variety of services to the young and families in our community. I work in their Toy Library and Playgroup Cafe.
I’m usually found helping in the kitchen (more fun than work), area of the Cafe and love making toasted sandwiches and milkshakes for adults and children. We also offer lots of other goodies and tea and coffee and baby cinos! I work as one of a team with some simply lovely volunteer colleagues and we aim to serve all in a giving and friendly manner. Structured activities are provided for the older preschool children giving the adults some free time to meet others and have a coffee and chat. Toys can be borrowed from the Toy Library.
In the kitchen we love to serve the Mums, Dads, Grandparents and coo over the beautiful children, most of whom come to us from diverse cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds.
The Toy Library Cafe provides a safe, low cost place for people and their littlies, to meet new friends or share with old friends. It provides a place in which people are able to break down the social isolation that can happen for those entering new communities. They’re able to receive acceptance and understanding from friends made, including the wonderful volunteers.
With so many nationalities and age groups represented, I love being a part of this and seeing people and children, interact with each other freely, often laughing through language barriers! To be a part of such a refreshing, tolerant enterprise in our community, is very special to me.
The challenge – wouldn’t it be great to see more ventures like this popping up in communities helping to make our world a kinder, safer place for all to live?
