With a hugely successful year behind them and a 25 year anniversary championing local table tennis coming up later this year, the SUNS (Sydney Upper North Shore) Table Tennis Association has a lot on the table for 2017.
Following another successful year in 2016 – when SUNS won the NSW Best Club title, their top player, Erny Tsao, won gold and silver medals at the national titles in singles and doubles, SUNS A team twice finished runner up in the North Sydney Premier Division as well as organised the International Taipei Cup tournament – this year looks set for further successes.
What’s more, the sport has become hugely popular with the over 55s and retirees at their popular Monday and Wednesday morning sessions held at the Thornleigh Brickpit stadium – where SUNS has 19 tables for playing table tennis.
A club spokesman said: “It appears there is a realization of the health benefits for seniors to defer or avoid the effects of Type 2 Diabetes 2 and dementia, as well as improving their physical well-being by playing table tennis.”
SUNS is now welcoming new players, experienced or not. Competition is played on Friday nights for matches against other clubs in the Northern District on a weekday home and away basis.
