Wanna be in my Gang?

Three generations of the same clan are keeping it in the family for this year’s fun-filled Hornsby Gang Show.at Barker College in Waitara from June 30.

Gang Shows are an international phenomena, aimed at encouraging kids and young adults in the Scouts and Guides to take part in musical productions – often bringing the shyer members out of their shells.

Many go on to become actors, writers, stage managers, producers and entertainers.

Started by Baden Powell during WW2, previous Gang Show graduates include comedy greats Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Tony Hancock, as well household names like Sir David Attenborough and Sir Harry Secombe.

“In fact it’s said that there’s a Gang Show playing somewhere around the world, every night of the year,” said Amanda Muxlow, pictured here with the other members of her family involved in the show, this year called ‘The Ride of Your life’.

For this hands-on crew, dad Troy does the security, grandad Barry is on the management committee, Amanda the marketing and the girls Olivia and Georgia perform.

“The ups and downs of an amusement park where the show is set, are meant to be an analogy of life for the show, which is performed by 110 Scouts and Guides aged from 11 to 30,” explains Amanda. “Many wrote the songs and choreographed the moves themselves, or did the lighting or stage managed.”
