An Australian War Requiem

The Sydney University Graduate Choir is proud to present a performance of Christopher
Bowen’s An Australian War Requiem on the centenary of the Armistice of World War I.

Premiered by the Sydney University Graduate Choir in 2014, this new Australian work has
been acclaimed as a major contribution to Australian music and a fitting commemoration.

An Australian War Requiem is set to a libretto by award-winning author Pamela Traynor,
and the moving text is created from the letters of soldiers on the front, letters of mothers in Australia writing to their sons at war, and the Latin text of the Stabat Mater.

Large in scale and musically demanding, the work is a rich and dramatically charged tribute. In the words of the composer:

“It is my hope that this War Requiem speaks a universal language and reinforces
those qualities which bring all people together and enable them to feel a common
humanity in peace.”

The Sydney University Choir and Orchestra will be joined in this performance by a talented
line-up of five gifted soloists: Taryn Fiebig (Soprano), Ashlyn Tymms (Mezzo-soprano),
Andrew Goodwin (Tenor), Adrian Tamburini (Bass), and Wade Kernot (Bass). A guest chorus of more than one hundred performers and a children’s chorus will also perform under the baton of the composer, Christopher Bowen OAM.
