Lifeline’s first giant book fair

The printed book alive and well in the age of digital

Lifeline’s popular book fairs throughout the year have proven time and again that the printed book — contrary to dire predictions — continues to thrive in an age where digital content rules.

These regular community fundraisers held around northern Sydney—by Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury (H2H) and run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers to raise funds for vital crisis support and suicide prevention services—are renowned for the vast number, range and quality of books on offer. Every genre of fiction and nonfiction for young and old is represented, and each event draws book lovers and serious collectors from far and wide.

This year Lifeline H2H is adding a new location to its book fair calendar: Macquarie University. More than 50,000 books will be available in over 50 general and specialist categories—including Art, Military, History, Cooking, Commercial Fiction and Literature. The collection of books for young people — from babies and children to late-teens — will be particularly impressive in size and variety, and is sure to draw many families and school students to this fantastic new venue.

In addition an extraordinary assortment of rare special editions will be available on a first-comefirst- served basis. Among the rare volumes to be snapped up are: Parables of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a fascinating illustrated book showing the preparation and construction of the city’s iconic landmark; and Norman Lindsay Etchings, a comprehensive catalogue featuring the artist’s unique work.

Whether you’re an ardent book buff or first-time fair visitor, you will delight in browsing as well as bargain hunting amid the staggering array of good-condition items (including CDs and DVDs) on offer at a fraction of retail price. Don’t miss this fantastic community event and the opportunity to start on some early Christmas shopping and/or to stock up on your summer reading. “Before coming here I would never have dreamed of giving pre-loved books as gifts, but I’ve just changed my mind” and “I can’t believe the quality and the amazing prices”, are two comments we regularly hear from first-time visitors to our book fairs.

And remember: every cent you spend will go towards Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury’s suite of services, including the 24/7 telephone crisis hotline 13 11 14, community aid, and group counselling for people struggling with gambling, hoarding, financial issues, suicide bereavement and much more.
