North Shore Craft Group celebrates 60 years of creativity

They’ve made tole furniture, they’ve enamelled, felted, wove, patchworked and quilted in the 60 years since it started – with many of these crafts currently enjoying a renaissance.

This month sees the 60th anniversary of the North Shore Craft Group – come along to their Contemporary Art and Craft Exhibition in Thornleigh from Thursday July 13th to Sunday 16th.

On display will be an eclectic selection of arts and crafts made by local artisans from the Northern Beaches to Berowra will include exquisite studio glass, leather work, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, weaving, wood, enamel and leather items, all for sale.

Ceramicist Nicky Coady explains its providence: “The NSCG was founded in 1957 by Phyllis Molesworth from Turramurra, a china painter and potter who wanted to foster an interest in crafts and bring together artisans and craftspeople from the North Shore who’d attained a high degree of proficiency in their field.

“We’re carrying on this tradition 60 years on, with members showcasing their creations through our popular two annual exhibitions in July and November.”

Well-known past members include Artists Lloyd Rees, Leonard Greening, Grace Cossington-Smith,  Potter, Janet Mansfield and many international award-winning artisans.

Organisers have also asked previous and current members  to enter one item to display in our special ‘Gallery’ section of the Exhibition, a roll call of the wide range of local creative talent across the decades.

“There’s also a fundraising element,” said Nicky, “with a percentage of takings going towards St. Lucy’s Foundation, a school for children with disabilities.”

Refreshments will be provided by the Country Women’s Association and there’s wheelchair access to the Centre.
