Think about the last place you shopped.
What were the reasons why you shopped there? Was it because they stocked the items you needed or liked? Easy parking? Or was it because they greeted you with a big smile each time you visit?
There are so many reasons why we shop at the places we do.
Recently, one of Mt Colah’s small businesses closed its doors for the last time. It was sad to see a family-owned business say goodbye. We thank them for their service to our community.
After the news of their closure, the Friends of Mount Colah started thinking about small businesses and how it’s not always smooth sailing.
There are so many issues that small businesses face today. Some include competition from big business, rent, wages and the changing retail environment – and they are why we need to support local businesses now more than ever.
Importantly, we must remember that the owners of local small businesses are not usually huge conglomerates, but more likely local mums and dads just trying to support their families and local community.
Within the Mt Colah shopping precinct, there are many businesses that are locally owned and run by families. Some have been running their business for years. Many locals have fond memories of being kids and running up to the shops – now they are running up with their own kids, years later. There is something so positive about a friendly and bustling community shopping area.
As a small business owner, I believe having the community support you by shopping local is vital. It is also important to engage with your customers and ask them what they need/want and implement changes in place to action the suggestions/ideas.
In this day of social media, there are many different channels to provide retailers with feedback. When was the last time you gave some feedback? How did you rate them? Did they need improvements? Did you make suggestions? These are just some questions we need to ask ourselves when providing beneficial reviews. Businesses are always looking for feedback as it helps improve and grow their business, ultimately benefiting you and the community.
