I recently took a trip back to Hong Kong after a 10 year hiatus and it had certainly ‘grown up’ in that time. There are a lot more super skyscrapers and a lot more reclaimed land. Hong Kong has prospered too and the shops in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island are now a who’s who of the fashion world.
So with all the glitz, glamour, chrome and glass it was nice to spend a morning in old Hong Kong. I joined a walking tour of Sham Shui Po, a working class area of Kowloon, which is still full of old traditions and original government housing. This can be seen at the wonderful Mei Ho House. The original building has been redeveloped into a Youth Hostel but it also houses a great little museum of the area.
From Mei Ho House it’s a short walk to the wet markets. Here you will see locals purchasing their daily supplies from fruit and vegetables to poultry, meat and seafood. Everything was fresh and tantalizing, so fresh in fact that the fish were still leaping about on the counters!
From the wet markets we strolled over to the street markets where you can find anything from clothes, to shoes, to phones and electronics. This is where the locals go for a bargain. Tucked away behind the stalls are also some great eateries and restaurants. One in particular, Hop Yik Tai, even has a Michelin recommendation. Also you know it’s good when the locals queue up outside. Hop Yik Tai’s speciality are the Chee Cheong Fun rice noodles made fresh and smothered in their house special sauces.
Our visit also included a stop at a snake soup shop, yes they sell soup made from snakes and no I didn’t partake but those who did said it tasted like chicken!
